Waarom je jezelf ondersteboven ziet in een lepel

Ik heb het nog even nagezocht op het internet en dit is de verklaring;

De reflectie van jezelf in de lepel is in werkelijkheid licht dat weerkaatst op je gezicht en dan weer in de lepel. Het plaatje is eigenlijk een bundel lichtstralen. Waarom het op zijn kop is? De lichtstralen zijn als een stuiterende bal; landen ze op een oneffen oppervlak, dan kaatsen ze anders terug dan als ze op een glad oppervlak landen.

Kijk maar naar het plaatje; de middelste lichtbundel wordt loodrecht weerkaatst, want die valt op een glad vlak. De andere lichtbundels worden schuin weerkaatst omdat ze op een schuin oppervlak landen.

Thoughts On A Job Hunt

(Super kort verhaaltje dat ik eeuwen geleden heb geschreven, maar dat een beetje lijkt op een droomtoestand. Vind je vast leuk).

One morning, I awoke and the world looked like a plum pudding. Everything had a soft, gelly quality to it that was incredibly pushy for some reason. I decided to devote the day to applying for jobs. An important task that I had forsaken the preceding two days.

Not only did I decide to hunt for jobs, I also was going to make sure I would not repeat words that day. One word, ten synonyms. You get the idea.

Looking for employment is like trying to have a vision for its own sake. Like a shuttered horse; the more you peer in the blindfold the more you likely 'see' the road ahead. In other words, depending on your hoofs is a tricky business.

But remember, it was a plummed world in which I was trying to swim. Plum redefines everything. Unsubstantial things like farts all of a sudden appear as shining beacons of health. Trapped farts (those that don't come out) too have a commanding presence.

Before your mind wanders off to what you might judge to be more important issues, let me beg you: don't go. Be trapped. If only for a split second. It's the cases in which you realize that you're escapable that you can push along the urge that's strong enough to release you out of any quagmire.

I wanted to talk about trapped nerves, but it's breaking the 'rules of engagement' for this story. Let's suppose then that a repetition did the trick. A repetition released the fart into the air. Like a bird that flies for the first time.

Or so.

Anyways, fart free, I am setting out to hunt for a job.

Family Resemblance

A new genealogy site allows you to upload a picture of your kid, your (ex) spouse and your self and have them analyzed on facial features. The face analysis meter indicates who your kid resembles more. In my case, our 12 year old son resembles me 4% more. On other pictures my ex scored better, but I think that objectively speaking the 4% is just about right. There's also a celebrity morphing tool on that site.

The Simpsons And Truth

I went to see the Simpsons the other day with my twelve year old son. He had seen the movie before but was keen to see it again. On our way to the cinema, walking the streets of Amsterdam, he made a point of telling me not to blabber about things without thinking first. I was curious what brought that on, because I am ALWAYS blabbering and he never minds. I decided to put it down to the movie we were going to see.


The Simpsons generally are so dysfunctional that it is easy to feel better about yourself, watching them. It’s a rule that every member of the Simpson family has a knack for going on when they should simply shut up. It is why they are funny.

The one exception was of course good ole Homer Simpson’s epiphany. It was Homer’s one and only chance to ever become a normal person. You feel all of a sudden a sense of hope and that is unique in Homer's case. The scene alone justified the entire movie, I think.

There is another dimension that we ‘invite’ all the time without thinking about it and which Homer is very examplary of. At one point, we might have to pay the bill for things we generally shrug off. We do not know when, how or why. It’s the nature of an ephiphany.

I have been wondering about why the quintessential cynic in cartoondom had to go through one? It might be question of a similar magnitude as why it took the makers so long to get round to doing a movie only now, even when fans called out for one as early as its fourth episode. The answer to the second question isn't readily available, so I'll home in on the first issue.

A true epiphany can hardly be communicated, yet the chances that an epiphany will happen in someone's life are very high. That is because you never expect an epiphany when it happens. In that sense, it happening to Homer, that most unlikely of characters, was a master stroke.

Life itself brings us many surprises every day. Scientists say that for every event that a human expects, there might be as many as 80 surprises/discoveries/new events. The stream of surprises that surrounds us is endless. Plus another fact is that humans are quite open to surprises: we like them, it is why we read newspapers. Humans have a natural craving for news.
Bringing on an epiphany isn’t how it works. It's only people that are idiots that want to bring one on. Or Jackasses maybe. Or people who are generally so bored they do not know what else to do.

Perhaps we are ready for a collective ephipany. Perhaps that is what the Homer Simpson experience really indicated.

Perhaps he spread the bug to my 12 year old before I cottoned on to it. One thing is sure; I'll sure watch what I blabber on about in future.
